DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

  • Growth habit: a shrub that depending on environmental conditions can be creeping, bushy, or more rarely, erect.

  • Leaves: needle-shaped, dark green and stiff. They are about 4 cm long.

  • Flowers: male reproductive structures are yellow and numerous, female ones are smaller and red-violet in color. Then there are the cones, which are the plant’s fruits, conical in shape and containing numerous seeds.

ETYMOLOGY OF THE NAME/HISTORY AND TRADITIONS: the origin of the genus name Pinus is controversial. The most plausible is that it derives from the Latin "pix", "picis" meaning resin, referring to the exudate the plant produces from its bark. The species name mugo comes from the Old French "musguet", a term used to indicate an animal with glands that emit an aromatic and musky scent, referring to the scent of the plant’s essential oil.

NOTES: it is the only conifer that grows at high altitudes where it plays an important environmental role by helping to stabilize the soil, preventing gravel and snow landslides.

HABITAT: it is a plant that grows in the mountains, at an altitude between 1000 and 2700 meters. In Italy, it is mainly found in the Alps, where it also grows on rocky areas and unstable slopes. It is resistant to cold and sun exposure.

TIME AND METHODS OF HARVESTING OR CULTIVATION: buds, young branches, and needles should preferably be harvested in spring.
