Natural Essential Oil - Roman Chamomile

Natural Essential Oil – Roman Chamomile
Oroil Line – Organic and Wild Essential Oils INCI: Anthemis Nobilis Oil
The delicacy of an ancient flower, in a drop of pure essence
Among the most precious and rare essential oils of European herbal tradition, Roman Chamomile holds a place of honor. Sweet, herbal, with a warm and slightly fruity base, its fragrance evokes the calm of flowering meadows and the ancient gesture of gentle care. The Roman Chamomile Essential Oil from the Oroil Line is obtained by steam distillation from the dried flowers of Anthemis nobilis, belonging to the Compositae family. 100% pure, with no additives of any kind, it carries the concentrated essence of one of the most beloved and studied medicinal plants in the world.
Botany and tradition
Anthemis nobilis — also known as Chamaemelum nobile — is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Western Europe, widespread in the temperate areas of the Mediterranean basin. Known and appreciated since ancient times, it was used by Egyptian doctors as a remedy against fever, by medieval herbalists to calm inflammations and promote rest, and by European folk tradition as a preferred remedy for skin and nervous system disorders.
Unlike German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), the Roman variety is characterized by a softer and more complex aromatic profile, dominated by angelic esters that give it the characteristic sweet and relaxing note. Its rarity — and the consequent value on the essential oils market — is linked to the low extraction yield: to obtain 1 liter of pure essential oil, 150–300 kg of fresh plant are needed, or about 150–300 g for each single ml (about 20 drops).
Composition and aromatic profile
The phytochemical profile of Roman Chamomile Essential Oil is dominated by a family of angelic and butyric esters, responsible for its characteristic fragrance and its properties traditionally associated with emotional and skin well-being:
- Isobutyl Angelate – main ester, responsible for the sweet, herbal, and slightly fruity note
- Isoamyl Angelate – provides aromatic depth and the typical roundness of the olfactory profile
- Methyl Propyl Angelate – contributes to the complexity of the top fragrance
- Isobutyl Isobutyrate – butyric ester that enriches the warm and slightly creamy base
- Pinocarveol – terpenic component with a fresh and slightly herbaceous note
This composition makes Roman Chamomile one of the essential oils richest in esters, a category of aromatic molecules historically associated with calming and harmonizing properties.
Properties and uses
Aromatherapy and diffusion
Widely used in the environment, Roman Chamomile Essential Oil is traditionally employed in aromatherapy for its calming, harmonizing, and relaxing properties. Its soft and enveloping fragrance promotes an atmosphere of calm, especially suitable during moments of emotional tension, restlessness, or mental fatigue. It pairs elegantly with other floral and woody essential oils, such as rose, lavender, sandalwood, and bergamot.
External use (always diluted)
Properly diluted in a carrier vegetable oil, it is used in body massage blends and localized topical care. It is traditionally appreciated for its soothing and balancing properties on the skin and is one of the most cited essential oils in aromatherapy literature for the care of delicate and sensitive skin.
Blends and synergies
Roman Chamomile is a valuable ingredient in aromatic synergies for well-being: it blends harmoniously in mixes dedicated to evening relaxation, skin care, and meditation rituals.
